Sheela
Sheela
Sheela is derived from the ancient Sheela Na Gig (English translation - Julia of the Breasts). Predating the 1200's in Europe, sculptures depicting female entities were placed in sacred spaces, places of worship, holy wells, as a talisman above doorways and windows - indicating a sign of fertility, protection and promoting life force. Often the image being a naked woman, with her legs open and an exaggerated vulva displayed. An ancient Celtic symbol of female fertility - it is widely thought by historians that the Celts were a matriarchal society.
The original intent of the Sheela Na Gig is thought to have been corrupted. The majority were destroyed during the introduction of Christianity and their message became one of 'warnings against the evil ways of the flesh' in an attempt to remove Pagan beliefs.
No one knows who carved Sheela Na Gigs or how many there were, however in today's world less than 150 remain - mostly found in European countries that were settled by the Celts - Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, France and Spain.
